Doors are storm hardware, and nobody treats them that way
When a named storm is coming, the Navarre checklist is well rehearsed. Water, batteries, fuel, shutters, patio furniture in the garage, documents in a bag. What almost never appears on that list is the doors, which is strange, because a door is the largest moving opening in the building envelope and the thing every other preparation depends on. Shutters over the windows and a front door whose bolt only travels half its throw into a strike plate held by two short screws in trim is a house that has been prepared everywhere except the place wind pressure and people actually act on.
This brand does one thing: getting doors and their locking hardware ready before a storm, and getting them working again afterwards. It is not general locksmithing, it is not emergency response, and it is not about buying a stronger lock. It is about bolt throw, anchorage, hinges, swelling, alignment and grit — six unglamorous items that determine whether your doors do their job when everything else is being tested.
Everything below can be checked by an owner in an hour with a screwdriver and honest attention. Where it needs more than that, it is a short visit rather than a project.
Bolt throw: is the lock actually locked
Start with the deadbolt, and test it the only way that means anything: door closed, then throw the bolt and pay attention to the whole travel.
A deadbolt is specified by how far it projects from the door edge when fully extended. That distance is what buries the bolt inside the frame. A bolt that reaches a full inch into a properly prepared strike is engaged in structure. A bolt that manages half of its travel because it is catching on the edge of the strike hole is engaged in nothing much, and it feels locked because the thumbturn stopped moving.
What you are feeling for: does the bolt run its whole distance freely, or does it hit resistance partway and require force to complete? Does it complete at all, or does the thumbturn simply stop? Can you throw it with the door closed as easily as with the door open? That last comparison is the diagnostic. Open the door, throw the bolt into free air, and note how it feels. Then close the door and do it again. If the closed-door version is harder, the bolt is rubbing on the strike, meaning the door and frame have moved relative to each other, and the bolt is entering at an angle.
Angle matters more than people expect. A bolt entering the strike crooked concentrates any load on one corner of the hole instead of across the bolt's full diameter, and it is also the reason a bolt jams and cannot be retracted at the worst possible time. Correcting it is usually adjustment — the strike moved, the hinges have sagged, the door has swelled — rather than replacement.
Strike plates into framing, not trim
This is the highest-value item on the whole page and it costs a handful of screws.
Behind the visible door casing there is a gap. The casing — the finished trim the strike plate is screwed to — is not the structure; the structural framing sits behind it, separated by an inch or so of air and shims. Standard strike plates ship with short screws that bite into the casing and stop there. So the deadbolt, however good, is anchored to a decorative board floating in front of the frame.
The fix is to drive screws long enough to pass through the strike plate, through the casing, across the shim gap and into the structural framing behind. That single change moves the failure point from "trim splits away" to "the frame itself has to fail". Do the same on the hinge side, because a door that holds at the strike and releases at the hinges has simply relocated the problem — hinge screws are usually just as short.
Two refinements while you have the screwdriver out. Replace a thin flat strike lip with a box strike, which wraps the bolt on four sides and spreads load into the frame instead of concentrating it on one lip. And check that the hole behind the strike is deep enough for the bolt to fully extend; a strike plate over a shallow or partially blocked mortise is a common reason a bolt cannot complete its travel.
Do this on every exterior door, and specifically include the door between the garage and the house, which is an exterior door in every way that matters and is usually the least prepared opening in the building.
Hinges, and the side nobody checks
The lock side gets all the attention and the hinge side quietly carries the same load. On a typical exterior door, three hinges are held by short screws into the same trim as the strike, with the same air gap behind them, so the hinge side is anchored no better than the lock side was before you fixed it.
Longer screws through at least one hole in each hinge leaf, driven into the framing, fixes it. While you are there, check for the two ordinary faults. First, loose screws — a hinge screw that spins without tightening has stripped its hole, and a door with a stripped top hinge sags, which is a leading cause of a bolt that no longer lines up. Second, sag itself: with the door closed, look at the gap between door edge and frame along the top and along the latch edge. It should be even. A gap that is wide at the top of the latch edge and tight at the bottom is a door hanging off a failing top hinge.
Sag matters for storms specifically, because a sagging door drags on the threshold, seals badly, and cannot latch cleanly — and a door that cannot latch cleanly is a door somebody will leave unlatched.
Doors that swell and refuse to latch
Humidity out here does not need a storm to move a door. It is a normal seasonal cycle: wood absorbs moisture, expands across its width, and the clearances the door was hung with disappear. A storm compresses the whole cycle into days — sustained high humidity, wind-driven rain, sometimes water intrusion at the threshold — and a door that was fine on Monday is binding on Thursday.
Recognise the sequence, because the response is what causes the damage. First the door needs a firmer pull. Then it needs a shove and a lift. Then the latch will not engage unless somebody leans on the door while turning the key. Every one of those steps transfers force into the strike screws and the hinge screws, which is exactly the anchorage you have just spent an hour improving.
The correct response before a storm is not to plane the door. Wood that has swollen with moisture will shrink again, and a door planed at peak swelling rattles for the rest of the year. Instead, deal with what is causing the bind: adjust the strike position, tighten and re-anchor hinges, address a sagging top hinge, clear the weatherstrip if it is what is actually rubbing. Those are reversible changes that hold across the whole seasonal cycle.
Slab material changes the picture too. Fibreglass and steel skinned doors do not swell the way solid wood does, though their frames and jambs still move, and their weatherstripping still compresses. If a wood exterior door in a coastal Navarre house has been fighting you every summer for years, that is a hardware conversation worth having outside of storm week.
The garage entry door
Worth its own section because it is consistently the weakest prepared opening on a Navarre property, and storms make that worse.
The overhead vehicle door is a large flexible panel, and in high wind a garage is a space that can be compromised. Whatever happens out there, the door between the garage and the living space is the boundary that matters, and it is very often a hollow interior-grade slab with a passage knob, no deadbolt, and short screws into thin trim — specified as an interior door because it does not face the weather.
Treat it as an exterior door. It wants a proper deadbolt, a box strike, long screws into framing at both strike and hinges, and a slab appropriate to the job. In storm terms it is also the door most likely to be standing open during preparation, while patio furniture and equipment are being carried in, and the one most likely to be left unlatched afterwards in the general chaos.
One more item on the same wall: if the overhead door has a manual release cord, know where it is and confirm it moves before you need it in the dark with no power.
What to check before a named storm
Run this in the calm days beforehand, not the afternoon everybody is boarding up. It is roughly an hour for a typical house.
- Every exterior door: throw the deadbolt with the door closed and confirm full, free travel.
- Every exterior door: strike plate screws long into framing; box strike where possible.
- Every exterior door: at least one long screw per hinge leaf into framing; nothing loose or stripped.
- Gaps even along the top and latch edge — no sag.
- Garage entry door treated as exterior: real deadbolt, proper anchorage.
- Sliders: secondary bar or pin in the track; panel cannot be lifted in its track; latch engages without help.
- Keys: a working spare that lives somewhere you can reach if you evacuate and return, not inside the house.
- Keypads and electronic entry: fresh batteries now, and a mechanical override key that has actually been tested this year.
- Every gate and outbuilding latched, so nothing is loose to swing in wind.
The single most common gap on this list is the last-mile key problem: people prepare a house thoroughly, evacuate, and come back to a property they cannot get into because the only key is behind the door. Sort that before you leave.
After the storm: alignment, grit and salt
The return is when most hardware damage is discovered and, unhelpfully, when everybody is least inclined to deal with it. Two categories of problem.
Alignment. Structures move. Frames can rack slightly, thresholds can shift, saturated wood swells, and doors that latched perfectly a week earlier now bind, drag or refuse to bolt. Do not force them. A bolt driven into a misaligned strike by force is a bolt that will jam extended, and a jammed deadbolt on a door you need to use is a genuinely bad afternoon. Work through the door: is it the hinge side, the strike position, swelling, or debris in the mortise? Let saturated wood dry before making permanent changes, and use temporary adjustment in the meantime.
Grit and salt. Storm air drives salt and fine sand into everything, including keyways. The symptom is a key that goes in with a gritty feel and turns roughly. The instinct is to spray oil into it, and that instinct is wrong — oil holds the abrasive against the wafers and pins and grinds them. Flush the keyway and use a dry lubricant intended for lock cylinders. Rinse exterior hardware with fresh water to remove salt from surfaces before it establishes corrosion, and pay attention to strikes, hinges and any fastener you just installed.
Then, once things have settled, repeat the pre-storm walk. What you are looking for is the item that changed: the bolt that used to run free and now catches, the hinge screw that has worked loose, the door that now needs a lift. Catching those in the calm period afterwards is what stops them becoming next season's failure.
